Yes or No: Mobile Phones on Your Belt

Absolutely Not!

Cell Phone - Belt

Guys, anybody with the slightest fashion sense knows that this must not
happen.  I appreciate it is practical, however it does not look good or do anything for the
modern well-dressed man.  It almost seems to be a growing trend in New York.  Over the last
few weeks I have seen many examples of this in both young and more mature men in London
and New York.

Cell Phone - Belt
I appreciate that we have reached a point were cell phones seem to be getting larger by the day, there are still options beyond the belt loop.
Avoid, avoid at all costs!

Burberry – A Timeless Classic for Fall

burberry coat

As fall approaches it is time to either reach for your classic pieces or restock before the winter starts to bite. As an English man I am possibly more drawn to Burberry than most. That said, the timeless nature of Burberry’s products (especially the mac and trench coats) are undeniable.

Every collection fails to disappoint and there is something for every style, from the traditional gentleman approach to hip and trendy.

All Burberry products are excellent quality and will last you many years. My first Burberry woolen trench is almost a decade old and is still serving me well through New York’s delightful winters. Whilst some of the more extreme designs will have you strolling New York looking like a Soviet solider (or whatever the current extreme trend happens to be), the majority will simply reinvent themselves every winter. As I often say building a collection over several years is the perfect option for Burberry. I am not suggesting filling your closets with several options in one year as Burberry (especially in the U.S.) is not a particularly economical option.

Dig deep once a year and build your collection over time. Avoid the military or current year extreme options as it is likely that next year it will remain at the very back of the closet (unless you are happy with one season wear, of course).

One final point, due to the elegance of their products, most of their overcoats can be used in a casual and formal settings. Try mixing up the formal with a tee-shirt and jeans and you create a wonderful coffee shop look for lazy Saturday morning. Slip it over your suit for the office and you create a timeless British look which can’t fail but to impress.

Weekend in the Hamptons: What to Wear to the Beach

The summer is now in full swing and for most New Yorkers that means either the Hamptons or Fire Island for multiple weekends. The big question is what to wear?

what to wear in the hamptons

Vilebrequin shorts are timeless classics. The shorts are amazing and come in many different styles. I have been buying from Vllebrequin for many years and the quality and design is exceptional. They are a must buy for any trip to the beach. The style will last for years and the quality allows you to enjoy them for many summer seasons. Added bonus, they come in father and son (as shown below) and they are adorable, but not cheap.

Quality never is!

A price tag ranging from $300-$400 will get you a great pair, but just remember you are making an investment for many summers to come!

Build up your collection over a numbers of year and you will have your private Vilebrequin closet collection.

Hamptons Weekend Tip:

Check out an early class at Soul Cycle to get you day off to a good healthy start.

Follow your spin with Coffee at Sag Town Cafe.

Men’s Shopping Guide: Summer in Madrid

I have been making semi-annual trips to Madrid for about the last decade. Apart from excellent friends, great food, and culture I find the fashion and shopping exceptional. As an English Man in New York I often try to find European designers that can’t be found in the U.S. Madrid has an array of small boutique stores offering marvelous things for any European or American. The prices are reasonable and the fashion is very different from anything you can source in New York.

A couple of my personal favorites:

Bow-Tie

Bow Tie is a Spanish store based on old English Fashion. They hand make shoes of many varieties. I personally like the slippers that come in many designs for men and women. Over the years I have collected several pairs and I wear them with everything from formal suits to shorts. I always receive compliments, and it is a sure stop of point for any trip to Madrid. Prices range from €100-€300 a pair.

The quality and the style cannot really be matched. There are brands in the U.S. doing similar options, however they are much more expensive.

Bow-Tie only has stores in Spain and having items shipped is complex. For the more conservative they do excellent formal shoes for the lounge suit or for something more casual on a day-to-day basis.

Loewe

Loewe can only be described as the very best of brands. Whilst in Madrid I made my first purchases at Loewe. The leather is simply outstanding. I have never experienced such leather in my life.

Brief Case – I have been looking for a briefcase for the office for many years. I really wanted something that was simple and could last me a working life time. For many years I had considered going for the Hermes classical case, however at €5,000 I have never been able to make the move! Whilst Loewe is far from cheap the quality and style of the brief case is simply timeless. Outstanding workman ship and I will carry this with me for many years to come.

Loewe is not an everyday shop unless you are very wealthy, that said, the occasional piece is simply stunning.

Leather Jacket – The second piece I bought was the dark blue Leather jacket. The design is simple and I love waist length jackets. I bought a biker jacket from Ralph Lauren back label a few years ago and fell in Love with the style. The quality of the leather on the Loewe jacket is simply outstanding. The design is sleek, the color unique and I don’t think the quality can be matched by any brand.

I will return to Loewe on my trips to Madrid. I am not sure how often I will buy as the price tag is very high. I think it is worth the money for quality. The quality will allow me to keep these two items for a long time and I truly believe the leather will get better with age.

TENKEY

Finally, I am happy to report a wonderful new addition to Madrid! TENKEY is a relatively new store in Madrid and offers a number of great options. During my last two trips I have bought quite a few items. The shirts have exceptional detail, the jumpers unique and the hoodies are excellent quality and a great style. I was stopped twice in NYC to ask the brand! This is often the case when wearing Spanish Brands, Unique in New York.

This is a must to add to your Madrid list!

They don’t appear to have a website at the moment. An in person visit is therefore required until they expand to an online option, but is definitely worth the trip.

Fondest Regards,

Michael

Swim Styles for Summer

Bluemint-Men’s-Swimwear-Spring-Summer-2014-3

It’s finally time for some fun in the sun! With the vacations being planned and trips to the pool necessary, it’s time to hit up your local retailers for a new swim suit. I am beyond happy that the popular style this season has shifted back to something a bit more conservative. Bold patterns and exciting prints are still trending, while length is about 4-5 inches above the knee.

becksswim

David Beckham has expanded his partnership with H&M into men’s swimwear this season! With many different styles and cuts, It’s no doubt you’ll find something you are comfortable with. The line stays very muted and masculine with solids tones. I personally own the white pair on the right and can confirm the fit to be amazing. Prices range anywhere from $12.95-24.95 at all H&M locations.

No matter your style, it’s time to go out and grab a new pair of trunks and hit the water this season. Have fun, gentlemen!

Style Spotlight: The 2014 Tony Awards

045804-5d9d88b8-ef67-11e3-b198-6a87bc8badd2

Award show red carpets are probably my favorite part of the season. Last night’s Tony Awards here in NYC was Broadway’s most anticipated night of the year. The hardest working people in show business showed up in hopes of taking home the coveted award. Led by Australia’s very own Broadway veteran and 4 time Tony Award host, Hugh Jackman once again shined with classical style and charisma.

66th Annual Tony Awards - Arrivals

An American Dapper favorite, Andrew Garfield donned his signature slim fit suit and skinny tie. The Tony’s has always been known for it’s classic style among the men and Andrew did not disappoint. The new Spider-man was in attendance representing his role in this season’s Broadway play Death of a Salesman.

2014 Tony Awards - Arrivals

Fresh off the publicity tour from the HBO film The Normal Heart, White Collar star Mathew Bomer was as dapper as ever in his perfectly tailored black tuxedo. Detailing with the always classic bow-tie, Mr. Bomer is a true representation of dapper style. You can catch Mathew in his incredible role as Felix Turner in HBO’s The Normal Heart, now on HBO and HBO GO.

Hope everyone enjoyed last nights explosive Tony Awards and congratulations to the big winner of the night, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
