Guys, anybody with the slightest fashion sense knows that this must not
happen. I appreciate it is practical, however it does not look good or do anything for the
modern well-dressed man. It almost seems to be a growing trend in New York. Over the last
few weeks I have seen many examples of this in both young and more mature men in London
and New York.
I appreciate that we have reached a point were cell phones seem to be getting larger by the day, there are still options beyond the belt loop.
Avoid, avoid at all costs!
Created out of a business school initiative in 2010, Warby Parker filled a gap in the eye wear market perfectly. If you are looking for up to the minute fashion glasses or sunglasses you really have the perfect one stop shop with Warby.
Living in New York, you have access to several trendy Warby boutiques that allow you to browse many option with friendly staff providing good tips on the style suited for your face. That said, their principal business model is an online business. The website allows you to upload your picture and see the various options virtually. A simple upload of your certified prescription and you are all set.
Both glasses and sunglasses range for $95 – $150 including lenses and delivery. Ordering online or in the store will have a small package arriving at your address of choice within 5 working days.
Added bonus, you receive a note in your package informing you that for every pair of glasses sold a pair is also sent to a person in need of glasses
I have personal being wearing glasses for the last ten years. The costs of glasses can be astronomical and given my personal ability to lose everything I have been looking for a stylish, yet cheaper version.
I have been using Warby parker for the last couple of seasons and they offer, quality, charity, fashion and efficiency; where can you go wrong.
Check them out on line or in store if you are located in the following cities:
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Boston, Massachusetts
- A, California
- Dallas, Texas
- NY, New York
There are also collections stocked with larger department stores in other locations.

I am not a heavy smoker, however I do enjoy a cigar with friends over whiskey from time to time. Following a recent European trip I simply fell in love with a vintage DuPont lighter I was handed whilst asking for a light outside of a club (common practice in Europe).
Having sourced three models since my trip, it is clear that their products are outstanding. The S.T.Dupont lighter is excellence without equal, with its famous “cling” when opened instantly recognized by those in the know.
There are two key styles in production. The four below show the historic design of the famous lighter. The gold and silver options are my personal favorite. Even though we are looking at a brand spanning over a century they are diversifying to produce products for all tastes.
The models vary in price and the gold and silver models naturally can carry a heavy price tag. Many of my articles refer to building a collection over a life time and that is never more relevant than here.
I am certainly not suggesting you become an every day smoker, however to recieve a Dupont is an exceptional gift and something that any gentleman would appreciate for many years and potentially a life time.

Scalpers opened its flagship store in Madrid in 2010. The brand started in Seville a number of year earlier making bespoke shirts and ties and has expanded to several locations across Spain. As I always find with Spanish Fashion, they create a good quality product at a good price. The style is typically Spanish and provides a unique look in both the U.K. and the U.S.
We have seen several Spanish brands expand to other areas of Europe and the U.S. however Scalpers remains exclusively in Spain. Since returning with several purchases I have been stopped in the streets of New York several times. They offer a great collection for the casual look. There formal range is limited and I do believe you have other Spanish brands that can offer a better product for the cost on the formal side. Casual fall is currently on offer and you really can’t go wrong for the costs. Added bonus you will possibly be uniquely dressed outside Spain.

Over the last decade I have spent a lot of time in Madrid for a mixture of business and pleasure, however I have rarely visited Barcelona.
My visit in early September was a rare treat to experience my normal Spanish delights and experience a few more on offer in Barcelona. My summary in one line would be, the delights of Spanish life with the benefit of a glorious coast line and Southern European fall weather.
Where to stay
The hotel Arts is part of the Ritz Carlton group and a must stay. Located on the edge of the beach a short taxi ride from the very center of the city it is the perfect location. You can sip cocktails on the beach, explore the unique architecture by Antoni Gaudi and given the late nature of Spanish culture you can enjoy the Spanish fashion and cuisine during the evening / early morning.
The service, and style of the hotel is exquisite. The rooms are designed with special detail and elegance and the suites offer breath taking views of the ocean and the city.

As fall approaches it is time to either reach for your classic pieces or restock before the winter starts to bite. As an English man I am possibly more drawn to Burberry than most. That said, the timeless nature of Burberry’s products (especially the mac and trench coats) are undeniable.
Every collection fails to disappoint and there is something for every style, from the traditional gentleman approach to hip and trendy.
All Burberry products are excellent quality and will last you many years. My first Burberry woolen trench is almost a decade old and is still serving me well through New York’s delightful winters. Whilst some of the more extreme designs will have you strolling New York looking like a Soviet solider (or whatever the current extreme trend happens to be), the majority will simply reinvent themselves every winter. As I often say building a collection over several years is the perfect option for Burberry. I am not suggesting filling your closets with several options in one year as Burberry (especially in the U.S.) is not a particularly economical option.
Dig deep once a year and build your collection over time. Avoid the military or current year extreme options as it is likely that next year it will remain at the very back of the closet (unless you are happy with one season wear, of course).
One final point, due to the elegance of their products, most of their overcoats can be used in a casual and formal settings. Try mixing up the formal with a tee-shirt and jeans and you create a wonderful coffee shop look for lazy Saturday morning. Slip it over your suit for the office and you create a timeless British look which can’t fail but to impress.

For anyone who has not yet traveled to the great city of London I would recommend you do so sooner rather than later.
How to get there?
Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is the way to travel. Several direct flights from New York to London daily will have you arriving perfectly, slightly intoxicated, full of food, rested and ready to explore London.
Where to say?
There are so many options in London and to narrow it to two is very hard. Two very different options:
Home House –
A Private club that sits in the heart of Mayfair. Much like stepping back in time to a classical time in London’s history. The three town houses converted in to two traditional houses and one modern house. There are limited bedrooms and you should book early. Much like staying at Downtown Abbey I suggest you opt for the Lady Islington Suite.
The house offers a glorious court yard garden, a formal restaurant, drawing rooms for meetings and to relax, a small Gym, and a nightclub all just steps away from Mayfair.
A jewel in London’s hotel scene. This is a building that has been transformed from a Whitehall Palace to an outstanding hotel. The renovation has restored the building to its absolute glory with service that can match anything in London. The bar, the restaurant, the health club and the rooms are stunning. Check out the themed suites for a level of luxury that will leave you simply wanting more.
Where to Eat?
Many people slate British cooking. Two options to change your mind:
The Ivy –
A very famous restaurant in London. The old world design and traditional food is a must. The staff are excellent and if it is a pre-theatre dinner or a late night supper it is the perfect choice. Reservations can be a challenge and it is not too easy on the wallet.
Hidden in Soho in a tiny house with intimate dining rooms with a very elegant unmarked entrance. Romantic and decedent. The tasting menu is the way to go. The pace of the dinner is very slow, however perfect for a special dinner.
