A Gentleman’s Decor: Embrace Fresh Flowers

Every gentleman should embrace fresh flowers in their life.

Since I was a child I have always been exposed to flowers. Since setting up my own home I try to have fresh flowers in my apartment all the time. Most men resist the inclusion of flowers in their life as they feel they are too feminine or they will tarnish their masculine reputation.

Waking each day and seeing flowers always make me smile. Different flowers remind me of different occasion and times in my life. Lilies in my apartment always remind me of my grandmother, while hydrangeas remind me of my mother.

Buying / Receiving flowers are spectacular for any occasion. If you are arriving for dinner, furnishing your host with flowers will never disappoint. Learn their likes and dislikes over time and take note of flowers you have seen in their apartment so you may arrive with them on your next visit. Understand their origins, if they are Dutch, bring tulips when they are in season, if they are English bring them roses.

Remember rose color rules, don’t bring red roses for your mother. Red roses are for your loved one and there is no greater gift than a spontaneous offering. Red roses on a rainy Tuesday are the perfect gift to send or receive.

Ode à la Rose, provide great flowers in New York. The personal touches they offer are outstanding. Delivery by bike, rose petals in the top of the box and one rose exposed making you order of 12, 13 or your order of 24, 25.

Give flowers a chance!

The Grey Area

Haven’t we all been a bit overwhelmed with finding that perfect color for a living space or choosing a shade that isn’t shocking and has the right amount of sophistication? It took a few hits and misses before I finally found a color that seemed to combine that feel of sexy, cool and mature all in one.

Grey isn’t just for Mother Dear anymore, gentlemen. Grey walls are becoming increasingly popular without coming across dreary and melancholy. You have many options as far as the tone of grey you could be more comfortable with. If you want to see how it makes you feel, try an accent wall. For someone who knows they like grey, try doing parallel walls. It makes your room seem longer and can help open up those cramped city apartments.

White walls look sterile and are honestly, boring. Once your space has been painted, accent the room with color. Pick a tone that represents you. I decided to accent with unique patterned bedding and curtains with monochromatic blues. Someone wanting something with more of a “pop”, try accents of orange or yellow. I promise it’s a decision you are not likely to regret.

Three Functional Decor Accents I Cannot Live Without

I have always believed that a house does not become a home until it is decorated. This, of course extends to apartments as I don’t personally know of any actual houses on the island of Manhattan. Decorating your personal space is the best way to create an atmosphere for your personal style, however it is also very important to think about function. Here are three decorative accents that you may add to your interior that not only look great, yet serve a purpose as well:
dapper home accents
A stocked bar– I am sure you will agree that any dapper gentleman looks that much more stylish with a drink in his hand. Thus, keeping a stocked bar lends an air of elegance to your space, and also serves as social lubrication. For an added refined look, keep your more exclusive liquors in crystal decanters.

Candles– Candles serve as both a decorative accent, and a great way to add mood and ambiance to your atmosphere. My favorite is manufactured by the company Acqua Di Parmi, because it is high quality, provides a decent burning time and amount of ambient light, and features an embossed crest which I think adds a hint of sophistication in and of itself. One hint is to burn all new candles for at least 30 minutes as soon as you get them home. This will release the scents from their oils into the air, and immediately establish them as functional elements, as opposed to superficial window decorations.

Fresh Flowers– I tend to love fresh cut flowers in my apartment because they illustrate the effort and care I put into maintaining my space. They are both nice to look at, and also give off a pleasant fragrance as well, so I often place them in oft-unthought of places such as the bathroom or the kitchen.

The Lost Art of Writing with a Fountain Pen

A fountain pen is the sign of any gentleman.  As a junior lawyer I once offered my fountain pen to a senior partner of the firm ‘currently interning’ and received the following reply ‘my dear boy, you should never share your nib’ (English for fountain pen).  Hence, the fountain pen is a personal accessory and one that should be chosen carefully.  As with anything in life the cost of pens can vary remarkably and as I often say you do not need to spend a fortune.

I have always found writing with a fountain pen to be a very luxurious ritual. As we all know, every facet of a man’s appearance makes up his personal style, including the implements he chooses to work with. Although it is something of a lost art, electing to use a fountain pen is a small detail that can add a lot of impact to your personal style and personage as a modern dapper gentleman with an appreciation for tradition.

I personally find fountain pens preferable to ball point options for several reasons:

  • Fountain pens train your hand to write with lighter pressure, making them less tiring to your hand, they allow for a steady flow, hence writing is not only more legible, but more attractive.
  • Although fountain pens require a slightly more costly investment upfront, they are refillable and repairable, and thus last longer.
  • A good pen will last you many years, and can even become a family heirloom to be passed to your children one day, thus it is absolutely worth the price for a quality piece.

I always love the personal advertising method of Patek Philippe ‘ You simply look after a Patek for the next generation’ ingenious marketing and the same can be true of your nib (for a true English Man).

Three Aspects of Elegant Masculine Interior Design

masculine interior design

A man’s atmosphere is an extension of his personal style, and must be designed accordingly. I find that having sophisticated taste in fashion tends to lend itself to design and decor, however I can also appreciate that designing your interior space is entirely different than designing an elegant statement piece. As men, we want a masculine energy in our decor, yet we still crave a sense of intelligent design. To that end, here are three simple rules to live by when decorating your space, to help you create an inviting atmosphere that echoes your style.

Lighting– Lighting is one of the most important elements to an interior design. When designing a lighting concept you should note that the light should be soft enough to create an atmosphere, yet strong enough that you won’t go blind, should you stay up late reading War and Peace. Consider varied light sources, such as table lamps, floor lamps, and fixtures combined, and play with the positions.  As far as style goes, the easiest way to create a masculine, yet tasteful lighting solution is to lean towards industrial fixtures. You can find such fixtures for a moderate price at places Restoration Hardware and West Elm.

Furniture– Black leather is often thought of as a typical masculine material, however I find it can be a bit garish and overdone. To achieve an understated masculine look, search for furniture in fine-grained wood, brown leather, and taupe canvas. There is nothing more comfortable than a fine, aged brown leather sofa, and taupe canvas materials balance the strength of the leather and pair well with modern implements.

I am always at home in an armchair and the French Vintage Louis XIV below is a delight for any man!

Accessories- I believe that every well-designed interior should blend the old with the new, thus antique markets are an excellent place to find interesting accessories for your design. The age of these artifacts create a conversation on their own, and blend well with modern furniture and appliances, if placed thoughtfully around a room. These bottles with foxed labels would make excellent fodder for a bookshelf, and the frames below create an easy wall decoration without much effort.

I am lucky to have a job that sends me all over the world.  I often pick up small vintage pieces for my apartment.  They add style and always bring back interesting memories every time you are asked about them!

When used together, these three easy tips should help you create an elegant interior with a masculine edge, and a great place to entertain guests.
